Another movie about a monster destroying New York? OK, not too original but could be fun, I usually like those kind of films, at least it'll be entertaining. Besides, it's produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by Matt Reeves so ... It can't be bad, can it?
After watching it, the answer is no, it isn't bad at all. What's more, "Cloverfield" turned out to be a pretty good "apocalyptic" movie filmed in an original way for its genre. All the action is viewed through the lens of a personal camera the main characters carry with them the whole time (something like "The Blair Witch Project", but with better image quality). Although that's not totally original, it is in this kind of movies, and makes it more unique. It helps you feel part of the action, events look more real, even though you are watching quite incredible things.
Special effects are good. Not the best, but blend with the hand-held camera images in a very realistic way, which can't have been easy to accomplish.
The great thing about "Cloverfield" is not its plot, there are tons of films with similar plots, it's the way the story is told and how it makes you feel like you where there with the characters, being part of what's happening, feeling the tension till the end of the movie.
