"Equilibrium" (movie review)

equilibriumAfter the Third World War, a fascist government took control and founded the city-state of Libria. The government decided human emotion was a disease, the cause of war, murder and disorder, so feeling became a crime. Now, every day all the citizens have to take a drug called Prozium to suppress emotion.

To apprehend sense offenders, fight any form of resistance and destroy forbidden items like books, music albums, paintings, and anything emotion related, a new kind of strike team, whose members, the Grammaton Clerics, are experts on a gun-fighting martial art called Gun Kata, was created. One day, one of the best clerics, John Preston, doesn't take his daily dose of Prozium and starts feeling...

Written and directed by Kurt Wimmer, "Equilibrium" is a spectacular sci-fi action movie that, sadly, was little promoted and received some bad reviews when released, which makes it quite unknown.

With clear similarities to Nineteen Eighty-Four, Fahrenheit 451 and other notable books, the story is very gripping. I really like Wimmer's filming style: the action scenes are amazing, with some resemblances to Matrix when the clerics fight, and the atmosphere (buildings, weapons, clothes...) is perfect. The cast includes Christian Bale, Sean Bean, William Fichtner, Emily Watson, Taye Diggs and Angus Macfadyen.
